Name: Thamesmead Estate
Date: 1967-1980
Architect: G.L.C Department of Architecture and Civic Design
Borough: Bexley
Listing:
Notes:
Large estate built on the marshes of Plumstead and Erith, to a design drawn up by GLC architect Robeert Rigg. His plan spread housing
around waterways and lakes connected by a system of walkways, hoping to produce a calm and serene atmosphere. The overall plan for the state was never finished, but a range of buildings and structures were completed, including health centres, librares, youth clubs, community centres, shops, schools and walkways. The estate is now being redeveloped by Peabody, with much of the original 1960s design being slowly demolished.
