Name: Sudbury Town Station
Date: 1931
Architect: Charles Holden
Lines: Piccadilly
Borough: Brent
Listing: Grade II*
Notes: The original box design by Holden, opening in July 1931. It is, as Holden described it in his own words, “a brick box with a concrete lid”. The original design was drawn up by Stanley Heaps, who produced a building much like Hounslow West, with a polygonal tower. Holden though this design overbearing for its setting and produced this simple rectangular arrangement.
The building is constructed from multi-coloured handmade Buckinghamshire brick, with an overhanging concrete roof. The outside originally featured a neon name sign, the only tube station to do so, it was removed in 1958. Inside the ticket hall the original clock and barometer survive, as well as the original newspaper kiosk. The platform area features two curved waiting areas, designed to allow passengers to see incoming trains, and a concrete foot bridge.
