Name: Gants Hill
Date: 1947
Architect: Charles Holden
Lines: Central
Borough: Redbridge
Listing:
Notes: The station is mostly located underneath a roundabout with minimal street level buildings. It was originally designed with a brick ventilation and clock tower. Inside at platform level, is a Moscow subway inspired concourse area, in cream tiles with coloured bands. The concourse area is 150ft long and features a domed ceiling.
The Moscow subway was built in 1935 and London Transport engineers consulted with the Soviet authorities on the construction of the underground system. Nikita Khrushchev had admired Holden’s redevelopment of the interior of Piccadilly Circus in 1928, and when he oversaw the creation of the Moscow Metro he made sure they were as memorable as Holden’s designs.
