Islington

Islington's main modernist interwar building is the Finsbury Health Centre, designed by Berthold Lubetkin and Tecton as part of their time designing for Finsbury borough, something that would continue after the war with estates like Spa Green and Priory Green, Those buildings are covered by our Modernist London site, with the buildings mostly from the post war era, apart from a few art deco cinemas like George Coles’ Carlton Cinema of 1930 near Essex Road.

The present day Islington borough was formed in 1965, with the previous metropolitan boroughs of Islington and Finsbury. The new borough continued the rebuilding of the area, which had been taking place since the 1920s, through London County Council and the forward looking borough of Finsbury. Alf Head was the new boroughs first chief architect and followed a similar path to neighbours Camden in building a variety of schemes, both large and small, and using up and coming architects with new ideas. Projects like this can be seen at the Penderyn Way scheme by Michael Gold and the larger scale Marquess Estate by Darbourne and Darke. Islington was also an area where young architects wanted to build their own homes and were able to create more experimental work with houses in Highbury Terrace Mews and the Hauer King House in Canonbury by Future Systems, good examples of this.
